Read Horn of Africa is a charitable non profit making organisation (Charitable ref.: 1098424) based in London but with support groups around the world. Their mission statement and motto (“Without education there is no light”) reflects their belief that education for all has to form the basis of any development and progress. Their principal work has been the ongoing maintenance and development of the Bursaalax Education and Development Project in a rural area near the Ethiopian/Somali border principally through the co-ordination of fundraising through individual donations. Based around a school started from scratch, the project has also involved the physical improvement of facilities for residents and work to make those residents more aware of their civic responsibilities. The success of the organisation’s approach is indicated in the following factors:

There’s an increase in the number of pupils receiving an education.
The increase of the population of Bursalah during the lifetime of the project from 2,000 to 10,000.
During the recent drought, Bursalah was a centre for famine relief when previously residents had to go elsewhere to survive.
Bursalah has never provided the militias with a furtile ground for recruitment.
