During the 2008 year Burar Project has achieved many milestones including the completion of building a secondary school and the expansion of the number of students to 740. These achievements are summarised below:
The Primary & Intermediate school has good academic quality when compared to other schools in Puntland State, Somalia. Year 1-6 attend morning classes, and their number is currently 505 students. Moreover, year 7-8 attend afternoon classes and there are currently 101 students.
The Secondary school runs in the afternoon for years 9-10, and their number is 49 students. Also, there are adult classes which are run in the afternoon and there are 85 students.
There are presently 15 teachers and 1 head-teacher. Overall the number of students attending the school is 740. There is high demand for good quality teachers at this school, and thus if there was adequate funding both the number of teachers and students can be increased significantly.
The city at present has no public transport and some students have to walk for over 45 minutes to attend classes. This shows that a standard school bus is badly needed to take the pressure of students. Also, a large photocopy machine is badly needed.
Boarding college area: The number of students who study, sleep and eat at this college is 243. Nevertheless, 93 students currently sleep on mattresses as there is a shortage of beds. In addition, mosquito nets are needed as mosquito bites can bring about serious illnesses including Malaria.
Hospital: Bursalah City currently has no hospital and because of this we hope to organise the building of a hospital within the city in near future. A local hospital is crucial as sick students and other persons residing in this town have to travel for over 2 hours to reach the nearest health centre in Galkaio, Puntland state.
Water & Borehole: The drilling of a second borehole was completed four years ago by Read Horn of Africa with the help of other international charitable organisations based in Puntland State. However, the borehole has reached at a stage where it needs good maintenance including new motor and pumping equipment. The benefits of the borehole cannot be underestimated as it currently supplies clean water for Burar project, all the residents of Bursalah city (more than 135 homes) as well the livestock of local nomadic residents.
